The palm activity and its infrastructure is associated with processes of territorial ordering with agroecological criteria, based on criteria of soil suitability and considering the protection of areas with high conservation value leading in this way to a conservation plan and with respect to the rights communities of the neighboring communities and workers.

 

The oil palm producers manage their crops with high standards of environmental, social and work performance, inspired by the Principles and Criteria (P & C) of the Sustainable Palm Oil Round Table (RSPO). This avoids possible environmental effects on soil degradation and contamination of water bodies. It also guarantees adequate working and social conditions for smallholders, contractors and members of productive alliances.

 

The palm sector, and national and regional governments have coordinated to ensure the legitimate ownership and use of land by all palm plantations. In no way has the activity generated processes of forced displacement of local or ethnic communities.

 

Potential areas for oil palm cultivation in Nicaragua have been defined by the authorities of the agricultural sector and of the country's territorial planning bodies. Using a set of climatic and edaphic variables specific to the agronomic requirements of the crop. And adjusted to potential land use studies for the area. Priority is given to areas devoid of forests, affected by other activities, lands that are not within protected areas, or used in the production of basic grains. Criteria that is part of the strategy to recover degraded areas, provide perennial crops that add value to the land, contribute to stabilize the agricultural frontier, provide permanent employment, foster community development and implement sustainable initiatives in the framework of environmental mechanisms.

 

Palm areas are located outside the National System of Protected Areas, established to conserve representative ecosystems of the country and its natural dynamics. In addition, there are preserved vital areas of conservation located within the farms. And sociocultural aspects of local populations are respected. The level of poverty in the potential zones indicates that the conditions of the settlers are difficult, with incomes lower than U $ 20.00 per capita/month. Consequently, most of the communities are in the categories of severe and high poverty, with the exception of municipal head offices.

 

They are currently promoting the process of National Interpretation of the International Standard for the Production of Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), with wide participation of different sectors, social, institutional, and producers. With the objective of establishing a national frame of reference for national certification processes with international recognition. They are also promoting the process of Training and capacity building in small and medium producers in good agricultural practices and issues associated with sustainable production.

History

The cultivation of the African palm in Nicaragua began in the years 1945 - 1950 with the sowing of approximately 500 hectares. Currently the production and harvest is carried out by PALCASA and Cukra Hill, companies located in the municipality of Rama and independent producers who seek to reactivate their production with the support of the Companies and CAPROPALMA, who carry out efforts to train in good agricultural practices and link them to support organizations, both to raise their productivity and to expand their crops.
